If that’s you, absolutely no shame,
but you’re going to want to keep reading.
We love the community of bootstrapping photographers out there because we’ve BEEN THERE. We really respect people like YOU who have what it takes to seek, find, and apply the skills that are needed to start a business and see some traction.
You’re at the point where your business questions may no longer be Google-able. Much to all of our disappointment, we can’t “ask Alexa” what the next right business move is to get us to that “better” life we’re dreaming of. And even those nicely-packaged and amazingly-marketed courses aren’t giving you the answers you need.
So, what comes after Googling?
From our personal experience, we’ve learned
Isn’t it SO cool that our world gives us access to all the information that we could ever want?
With a crap ton of options comes a lot of possibility, plenty of distraction, but not a lot of focus or direction.
And if you really want GROWTH in your business?
Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting therapy or anything (although, big fans). No, we’re suggesting finding a mentor who’s been where you want to go. Once you find them, they can help you establish a shorter path to running the photography business you dream of instead of maintaining the one you feel stuck inside of right now.
Oh, and did we mention we’d really love to be those mentors for ya?
So, what if the key to your next level of success in business wasn’t knowing more but rather someone knowing YOU more?
Growth is simply the result of heading consistently in the direction you want to go.
We get it. There’s a lot competing for your attention and “investment” in the business space. Almost everyone will try to sell you on why their thing is right for you, but we’d rather lead you to why YOU are right for this next step. So here are a few things you might be feeling if it’s time to move into a space with more personalized guidance than packaged processes.
This is where Google and YouTube and Course University come into play, right? You’ve done the challenging, but really rewarding work of figuring out how to use your camera and create something absolutely priceless for your clients. Unfortunately, basic skills can only get you so far, and that whole “my work speaks for itself” is a big ol’ myth. There is a way that we can take that skill you’ve learned and turn it into something BIG. Some simple, but focused steps forward can get you there.
Maybe you found a YouTube video that showed you how to send an invoice. Maybe you’re rocking it with the basics in HoneyBook or Dubsado. Maybe you’re charging people via Venmo (this is not what we recommend). No matter where you are in your “getting paid” journey, there’s a way to streamline this process and make it easier and more reliable for both you and your clients (and there’s a way to protect yourself in the midst of it all, too).
For some photographers, their business runs primarily on social media and that whole website thing is really just checking a box. Or maybe you haven’t even had time to get your website going yet. Either way, your website has the potential to be a huge asset that takes a lot off of your business plate, and can even call in more of the right people while you’re doing anything other than telling people what you do and how many images come in a package 24/7.
If this is where you’re finding yourself, you are not alone! In fact, most business owners hit the point where their own hustle taps out as the key to growth. Business can truly grow in a million different ways, so once you hit a plateau, the real key is ESTABLISHING DIRECTION, and then committing completely only to actions that’ll move you in the direction you choose. Remember how we said “growth is simply consistent movement in one direction”? This is what we find most people need help and accountability for.
If you’ve created something that’s growing consistently, your worst enemy JUST MIGHT be “ideas” and “possibilities” to continue to grow things. Business growth doesn’t slow down from focused pursuits, but rather when we break up our time and energy and momentum by pursuing too many things, or wasting too much time figuring out what’s next. That’s why having a mentor who can help you define your unique goals and hold you to your path toward them will really be priceless as your next step.
Rather than trying to fit every photographer into a single box (or “coaching container” like the gurus tend to call it), we’ve got 3 different choices tailored to fit photographers who need varied levels of support to reach their goals.
I was at a crossroad where I wanted to (finally!) charge prices that reflected my experience and skill level, but was suffering from a disconnect between inquiry and booking.
I reached out for mentorship and couldn't be happier with how this guidance shaped my business!
Within 2 weeks of tweaking and implementing the feedback, I EASILY booked 7 WEDDINGS! 6 months later, I'm now easily booking next year’s weddings and turning away dates this year because I am overbooked!”
“Joy and Ben were amazing! They made our whole wedding planning process so effortless, from the engagement session to the wedding day. They were energetic, organized, professional, and so laid back. We couldn't have asked for a better photography team to share
our wedding day with!”
- Alexa & charles
“Joy and Ben are AMAZING! We hired them for our wedding day in Sedona and they did such an amazing job. All of our guests loved them and I received so many compliments on how
professional and kind they were to everyone. Not to mention, our pictures were incredible. They captured our day so Perfectly!”
- allisa & nick
“I cannot express in words how amazing Joy and Ben are! They captured our wedding day perfectly, and notably the “wedding moments” but special in between ones we didn’t think of.
- Abbey & CJ
“We had such an amazing time working with them and were amazed at the results. We loved working with Ben and Joy so much that we had them photograph our wedding! They were there for us every step of the way leading up to our Big Day!"
- Annie & Connor
“We ended up hiking up Cathedral Rock and getting some of the most stunning pictures I have seen. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Joy and Ben were very sweet, patient and put both of us at ease. We had a lot of fun and got the best pictures!"
- Jackie & jacob

We’re Joy and Ben, Phoenix photographers, best friends, and soul mates who really love to capture other soul mates.
I mean, aren’t most of us photographers passionate about relationships?!
But as we’ve seen in our own experience as photographers, the reason you started your business quickly starts to give way to the majority of your time being spent on the things you don’t know a dang thing about.
You’ve gotta learn how to master lighting, get the hang of editing, stay hydrated on a long shooting day, not to mention…
… getting clients, showcasing your work, finding the RIGHT clients, invoices, workflows, websites, it goes on and on.
We know it can be easy to get bogged down in the “I don’t know if I can sustain this dream on my own” kind of place. You may even start to question if it’s worth it to continue trying to build this business thing.
It’s hard to take time and focus on the big picture when you’re stuck on the small tasks you never asked for.
Soooo, this is awkward. Anyway, HI!
In 2007, Kyan was diagnosed with rare liver cancer at just 2 years old. He went through 6 months of aggressive treatments and two liver transplants, only to have the cancer return shortly after.
At that point, our daily reality was touch and go, but Kyan's spirit continued to drive us to keep fighting. But truthfully, we had no idea how we would survive this loss.
We had a friend who was new to their portrait photography career, and he offered us a family session. At the time, we didn't realize how saying yes would fully impact us, but we are grateful to him every day.
Not only did he give us beautiful photos, but he also documented a moment in our lives we would never get back. He captured the raw love and emotion we felt that day—and even though we lost our son, we can relive the genuine joy and excitement in every picture framed on our walls through his photos.
We will forever remember that day exactly how it was because of his incredible talent and gift.
through this experience we learned
And right now? You’ve got an opportunity to continue with building a business that can not only capture life, but can remind people of it for years to come.
You’ve also got an opportunity to keep taking the slow + confusing road on your own, or to make the most of your days by investing in the ability to have someone who’s already made the mistakes help you leap over and blow right past them in your own pursuit of better.
Now, we’re not gonna sugarcoat it. Going faster doesn’t necessarily mean skipping that whole “failure” thing. Things won’t always go exactly the way you expect them to, but if you can have someone in your corner to stay focused on what you really want and what we know will get you there, those really tough moments in life and biz will never go wasted.
Don’t be shy with those questions! Here are some photographers like you have already asked, so you know you’re not alone.
First off, yay! That means you like us. More importantly, that means you like what we can help you do inside your business. You can OF COURSE continue your journey with individual sessions at your own pace, OR you can purchase one of our longer-term mentorship packages at a discounted rate (#existingclientperks). You can think about the 90-minute intensive as a “try before you buy more” kinda thing.
The follow up call was designed to help you get into the habit of reviewing goals, analyzing results, and recalibrating your action. This process is ESSENTIAL to building a sustainable business. During this call, we'll review your initial goals, then we'll review the actions you’ve taken and assess what resulted from each.
Finally, we'll help you re-evaluate based on your efforts and results to set further goals and plan out actions you can take to help you achieve the next level. That means you’ll have a path forward, even by the end of our time together!
Absolutely! For all of our ongoing mentorship packages, we offer unlimited support via email. That means you can shoot over questions, braindumps, implementation struggles and everything in between, and we’ll get back to you within 24 hours to help keep you on track!
Oh man, we totally get this. Like we’ve said a million times, options are the enemy of growth, so we are more than happy to help you narrow down the options based on your specific goals! Since we take a personalized approach to mentorship, we really like to hear more about your needs, wants, desires, and current struggles in order to make a really solid recommendation. Shoot us an email and we can get it figured out!
We are equipped to help any type of photographer because even though you’re serving different types of people, the process and workflow is largely the same when it comes to skills, marketing, and streamlining your process. For that reason, we can help you whether you’re scaling the side of a mountain with your camera, scoping out secret celebrity venues, or even if you’re drowning in wildflower mini-sessions!
